Steam bending allows you to shape wood beyond the limits of sawing or laminating. Perfect for making chair backs, arms, or even sled runners.
Materials

Tools Needed
Steam box or PVC pipe with kettle
Heat source (wallpaper steamer or turkey fryer)
Clamps
Bending form (DIY with plywood)
Timer, gloves
Steps
Build Your Form
Trace your curve onto plywood and cut with jigsaw.
Duplicate for a matching clamping side.
Add standoffs and handles.
Steam the Wood
1 hour per inch of thickness (e.g., 45 min for 3/4”).
Keep wood sealed in box, use thermometer to maintain 200°F.
Bend Immediately
Remove and clamp quickly to the form.
Leave in form for 24+ hours to fully dry and set.
Trim & Integrate
Once set, trim to size and sand.
Integrate into chairs, sleds, or armrests.
