Steam bending allows you to shape wood beyond the limits of sawing or laminating. Perfect for making chair backs, arms, or even sled runners.

Materials

Tools Needed

  • Steam box or PVC pipe with kettle

  • Heat source (wallpaper steamer or turkey fryer)

  • Clamps

  • Bending form (DIY with plywood)

  • Timer, gloves

Steps

  1. Build Your Form

    • Trace your curve onto plywood and cut with jigsaw.

    • Duplicate for a matching clamping side.

    • Add standoffs and handles.

  2. Steam the Wood

    • 1 hour per inch of thickness (e.g., 45 min for 3/4”).

    • Keep wood sealed in box, use thermometer to maintain 200°F.

  3. Bend Immediately

    • Remove and clamp quickly to the form.

    • Leave in form for 24+ hours to fully dry and set.

  4. Trim & Integrate

    • Once set, trim to size and sand.

    • Integrate into chairs, sleds, or armrests.
